Thrift Store

This is a really slow time of year here at Oasis Academy (SARCASM) so we have decided to take on a thrift store . .  .

Obviously, there are lots more details to follow, but I'll give you the basics for now: it will be located behind Louie's Dollar Center.  You will actually have to go through the dollar store to get inside the thrift.  We hope to include any charitable organization here in Fallon who wants to be involved, and provide FOA with a steady, consistant monthly income.  Keep your fingers crossed!

The Reading List GROWS and GROWS and GROWS!

Aside from my children, there are 2 things I really miss since going back to work full time:  cooking wonderful meals for my family, and having time to read!  I am right in the middle of reading Cutting for Stone (which I am LOVING) and the MET Project report which a comprehensive study being funded by the Bill and Melinda Gated Foundation on measuring effective teachers (MET).  In the to be read stack: Differentiated Coaching, Motivating and Inspiring Teachers,  Bossy Pants and Girlchild: A Novel (both already downloaded on my Kindle) . . . . There just aren't enough hours in the day!

I hope you have a few minutes to enjoy a good book or article today!

Performance Audit Season

We have officially entered our first "Performance Audit Season,"  which is not the most enjoyable season to be in.  The performance audit is an annual event that looks at everything from our personnel files to our fire drill log, to our inventory, to our budget . . . basically the list of documents we must have ready to go is 7 pages long, so if Mike, Julie, or I seem a little dazed and confused you'll know why!

Here's to passing with flying colors!

SPCSA First Meeting

ttp://www.lahontanvalleynews.com/article/20120213/NEWS/120219964/1087&ParentProfile=1045

Friday, I flew to Vegas to the first State Public Charter School Authority Board meeting.  The Link above, give a great description of it.  The reason I mention it is because the what the article does not mention is the fact that Governor Sandoval gave a huge shout out to the school.   He went out of his way to tell the board he had the opportunity to visit the school, that it was a great success story, and great to see the staff and students doing so well.  It sure was a great way to kick off the board meeting (at least as far as I was concerned).

AAUW

I had to the opportunity to speak Saturday the 4th to the American Association of University Woman.  I always love the chance to talk about the school, and share my point of view on education in 2012.  The group had lots of great questions. We also took a tour of the school, and the woman really seemed to enjoy the opportunity.

French Drains

As you are all aware, we installed the playground equipment over the winter break.  What you may not realize is that we also installed a "french drain" to help ensure that we don't have a lake, rather than a playground,  on wet days.  When I looked at the french drain after it was finished I was certain that it was not slopped enough and it wasn't going to work (why I thought I knew more than the experts who built it is a mystery)!  I am happy to report, that the experts knew what they were doing and it worked like a charm!  Once again, making me grateful to work with such competent smart people! You would not believe the amount of water coming off the roof!
